Bodhisattva
Bodhisattvas are both living and transcendent beings who, motivated by compassion, forsake their own individual enlightenment in the service of awakening all sentient beings. This is not only a Buddhist concept as compassion is a quality that is available to all beings and as such Bodhisattvas may be found across all cultures and faith systems. Beings such as Manjushri, Tara and Kuan Yin demonstrate this ideal. In our times, St Francis of Assisi, Gandhi, and the Dalai Lama are examples of those who embody the qualities of the Bodhisattva.
