Medicine Buddha
Medicine Buddha embodies the healing aspect of enlightenment and is understood to be the source of spiritual medicine that can cure spiritual, psychological, and physical disease. As with any ancient religion followed widely across different cultures, there are many threads to the Medicine Buddha practice — all of which lead to this same healing aspect.
The body of the Medicine Buddha is dark blue and he wears the robes of a monk. He is seated in the full cross-legged posture. His left hand rests on his lap in the meditation mudra; holding a begging bowl filled with medicinal nectar and fruit. His right hand is in the mudra granting blessings and in it he holds the stem of Terminalia chebula (also known as arura and myrobalan); renowned as the king among medicines because of its effectiveness in treating both mental and physical diseases.
