Meditation Snow Lion Lecture Series 2012
Introductory Talk for the Six-Part Mindfulness Workshop
“Healing and the Wisdom Body”
Through the telling of the Jataka Tale: “The Blue Bear”
“Our body is a great reservoir and tool for transforming our lives. Yet, many of us are disconnected from our physical bodies and suffer because of this. There are also those in the world who demonstrate great skill and discipline with their body/minds such as dancers, singers, orators…. Yet, even with great accomplishment in knowing how to use the body/mind, they still have pain and suffering in their lives. So what can be done? The great Sufi, Rumi says, “Read the book of your life. Look in. Study yourself.” So how do we do this? Without the practice of awareness, without the practice of meditation, we become off-centered and distracted. If we learn to meditate and pay attention to our body/mind then the universe opens to us and we learn to develop skillful discernment in this life that is beyond circumstances and conditions.
The Jataka tales are Buddhist stories of compassion, wisdom, patience and strength. These tales demonstrate the journey one takes in transforming the limitations of mind and body. The stories give direction and guidance which point us toward developing our own “perfection of character” in all its aspects. Theodore will share a Jataka tale and provide a forum for discussion in how these stories can support us in our own lives.
