Most mindfulness workshops (but not necessarily) follow a public talk, which introduce and describe the overall framework of the mindfulness four, six or eight week course. It is also an opportunity for people to ask questions about stress, depression, pain, and any other issue that can be helped through mindfulness practice. The mindfulness workshops (courses) are based on work of Jon Kabat-Zinn. Following this introductory talk, one may fill out an application to attend the next upcoming workshop. A mandatory short interview will then be scheduled to explore goals and discuss the appropriateness of attending a workshop at this time.
Please Note: One does not have to attend the introductory talk. Applications may be completed at any time prior to the workshop.
The workshops are held (as much as possible) on four consecutive weeks, usually on a Thursday in Toronto and on Mondays in Owen Sound from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm . The program involves learning, practicing and reviewing mindfulness techniques. Each week, homework is assigned to assist in learning and developing a personal mindfulness practice. One is asked to commit to 45-60 minutes per day for homework for the duration of the program.
Over the course of the workshops participants will be able to:
- Apply the techniques learned to everyday living.
- Share and discuss experiences in a safe and confidential environment.
- Explore what was challenging and learn how to work through the challenges.
- Look at what worked specifically for individual needs.
One-day Mindfulness Retreat
At the completion of the four, six or eight-week mindfulness program, a one-day mindfulness meditation retreat will be arranged. The body of work that one has learned and practiced will be reviewed. It is an excellent refresher course and encourages the new mindfulness practitioner.
